Taking care of your money

At Footsteps we recognize the importance of making sure the sponsorship money is used effectively for the benefit of the children and is protected from unnecessary costs or fraud. To this end:

  • Funds transferred to Kenya are managed through a central Footsteps bank account in Nairobi and are controlled by a Project Director.
  • Funds are transferred to the Community Leader in accordance with an approved budget built around each child’s individual needs.
  • Sponsored children receive benefits and services and not money. Goods and services are bought centrally by a local coordinator and allocated to the sponsored child and their family.
  • A monthly review of the accounts and visits to the supported child confirms the goods and services have been properly received.
  • In the UK, all work is undertaken on a voluntary basis. In Kenya, we receive much help from local volunteers with a small allocation for travel and administration. However we pay for local social workers to review the child’s progress and ensure that the goods provided are used to benefit the child.
  • A representative from the UK will visit the community and meet with the sponsored children and their families every few months
